Interview experience:
Not sure about Class date, I was told around the 1st of the year. I interviewed at the end of a interviewing campaign- so no sim for me. Interview was at DIA with Chief Pilot Aaron Rex- nice guy. After 45mins through security- making sure my cell phone, briefcase with far/aim inside, and shoes weren't dangerous I made it to the concourse and Chief Pilots office(that was the only hard/stressfull part of the day.)
We started with the warm up of how was it to get here, why'd you start flying etc. Then the required questions: Felonies? Bent aircraft? Break an FAR? - this I said "never knowingly" (thinking back to student pilot days of FAR? what are they?) this got a raise- "well did you ever find out after the fact that you had broken one?" "NO I didn't mean it that way- I haven't ever broken an FAR or found out after the fact I had done so." So, don't mince words-be specific. Aaron was cool, but don't waste his time.
Talked a little about my experience, in my 135 flying on a Navaho did we use NOS or JEPP- I said NOS but knew JEPP. He tried to ask symbols on jepps that were the same to nos- which I thought was damn decent of him. We got deeper into the charts and I told him what everything was on the Jepp and what it was on NOS- that seemed to impress him. You have to know your charts well- it really pays off. KNOW Jepp, if you say you know NOS you better know both really well.
After that, the standard questions from the other gouges here- ie. Lost Comm, etc, Capt. wants to depart when covered in frost (Aaron mentioned that's against FSM -company regs- and FAR's) I told Capt. we need deice, Aaron pushed me until I said I would physically take control of the airplane and stop us from departing. I think the lesson here is that they are hiring FO's but they want you to upgrade to Capt. and show leadership and good decision making skills.
Since I didn't have a sim check- he asked if I intended to get sim time before class- I said yes I do. Interview over. It was a really good interview experience- largely due to this website. Read all the gouges and be able to discuss all the subject matter contained here.
The Sim time you should pursue is at Advanced Aviation Simulators (at APA Tac hanger 8) Office 303-649-9901
Cell 720-320-7303 Lisa Neifert is the owner and Matt Bowden is an instructor there. They are great to work with, I spent a week there after interview. Matt is a former Great Lakes Capt. and a fantastic resource, he taught not only the flying and instrument techniques but systems too. They were very affordable- in fact I don't think you can afford not to get some time. They have a desk top Elite- that Lakes uses for interview checks, and a large cockpit Elite iGate set up as a King Air 200. Having been there I feel confident that my training will go well at Lakes, and will go back before my sim training starts at Lakes to brush up.
If you have a sim available elsewhere- use it, but Advanced Aviation Simulators is really worthwhile.
Best of luck to you all.
